The Friends of the Passaic River Mission Statement
At the Friends of the Passaic River, Inc. 1997 our objective is to be instrumental in finding the best ways to gain an appreciation for our river and to promote ecological and recreational uses and good conservation practices for our natural resource. When a clean and healthy river is available, numerous leisure activities can be enjoyed such as boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming.
Unfortunately, years of neglect have made the Passaic River infamous for its pollution, ranking in the top ten as one of America's worst rivers. Although the Passaic River has been upgraded from "toxic" to "very poor", many organizations believe it will get better sooner or later.
The Friends of the Passaic River prefer sooner! We understand that a well thought-out plan is necessary to revive such a natural resource. We have been active leaders in conducting the Passaic River Field Program sponsored by the NJPAC and funded by Prudential. With participants from Central High School and other community members in Newark, we have conducted many debris removal programs with great results.
Our plan is designed to educate everyone on what is happening in their stream or bay, create projects for school, service, youth or community groups to get involved in, and ensure that community decisions are based on good data and information.
Currently, we are conducting fund raising events to fund a cultivation campaign geared toward river restoration, and restoration management. Before our community can safely enjoy the activities mentioned, the river will need to sustain the diverse assemblage of natural communities, and marine life that should exist in a healthy, thriving river. Become a friend today and join us in restoring and revitalizing the Passaic River.
